The French Open 2026 begins May 24 at Roland Garros in Paris — and the biggest storyline is the one that will not be there. Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, has officially withdrawn with a right wrist injury, leaving Jannik Sinner as the overwhelming favourite to claim the one Grand Slam that has eluded him.

🚨 Alcaraz out of Roland Garros 2026
Alcaraz confirmed he will miss the French Open after tests revealed tendon inflammation and cartilage damage in his right wrist. He also missed Rome, losing 3,000 ATP ranking points as defending champion. Roland Garros official statement.

A Lesson for Every Player

The injury began as discomfort during a return shot at Barcelona. Alcaraz pushed through it — and it worsened into serious tendon and cartilage damage. At the Laureus World Sports Awards he said: “I would rather come back later and fully fit than return too soon. Pushing for Roland-Garros could seriously affect me in future tournaments.”

The same logic applies to recreational players dealing with tennis elbow or wrist pain. The best player in the world skipped Grand Slams rather than risk long-term damage. You can skip a Tuesday club match. Play the long game.
