Tennis gear laid flat on a wooden bench: racket, shoes, balls, overgrips, towel and water bottle

Whether you are just starting out or returning to tennis after a break, this is the definitive list of what recreational players actually need — and what gear shops want you to think you need.

The Essentials — You Cannot Play Without These

ItemWhen You Need ItApprox Cost CAD
Ball hopperWhen practising alone or with your kids$30-80
Restringing budgetEvery 3-4 months if playing weekly$30-60 per restring
Sun visor or capOutdoor summer play$15-30
WristbandsWhen you sweat through your overgrip$10-20
Ball pressurizerIf you go through 2 or more cans per week$25-40

What You Do Not Need Yet

  • A $250+ racket — you will not feel the difference until your technique is more advanced
  • A ball machine — only worth it once you are practising intentionally 3 or more times per week
  • A tour bag for 12 rackets — you have one or two rackets, a backpack is perfectly fine
  • Natural gut strings — excellent but $60 per restring is overkill until you play 4 or more times per week

💡 The 80/20 rule
80% of your on-court improvement comes from the racket, shoes, and overgrip. Get those three right first — then add the extras as you develop.

Once you have the essentials, check out the LooseTennisBalls shop for tennis merch that is purely for fun — t-shirts, mugs, stickers, and hoodies for recreational players who get it. 🎾
