Tennis doubles match on court — strategy guide for recreational players

Most recreational doubles is just singles with a partner standing at the net wondering what to do. Here is how to actually play doubles properly and win more because of it.

The 4 Doubles Formations

FormationWhen to UseAdvantage
Both up at netAfter a good approach shotMaximum pressure on opponents
Both backWhen you are in troubleResets the point and buys time
One up, one back — standardDefault formationCovers court and allows net control
I-Formation — advancedOn your serveHides your serve direction

The Net Player’s Real Job

  • Poach — move across to intercept any ball that can be cut off
  • Pressure — an active net player changes opponent decisions even without touching the ball
  • Communicate — call mine or yours loudly on every ball near the middle
  • Reset — move back if opponents successfully lob over your head

Serving in Doubles

Focus on higher first serve percentage — 80% or more — at slightly reduced pace. Your partner needs that first serve in to maintain net pressure. See our serve improvement guide.

Returning in Doubles

The golden rule: keep it low and return to the net player’s feet. Cross-court at the feet every time until you have good reason to go elsewhere.

Communication Calls You Need

CallWhen to Use
“Mine”Call loudly for any ball in the middle
“Out”Call immediately — do not wait for your partner
“Switch”When lobs force a position change
“Up”Signal to partner to close to net

🎾 The best shot in recreational doubles
The low, slow ball down the middle of the court. Not glamorous. Extremely effective. Creates confusion about who takes it, eliminates sharp angles, and lands where the net is lowest.

See also the singles tactics guide — both transfer directly to doubles. 🎾
